I know your groom probably doesn't read this blog, but you may want to forward this post along to him, especially if he is planning on doning a tux for the big day! When it comes to tuxedos, I've found that many grooms don't even know where to begin. So if your man is looking to purchase a tux, Brooks Brothers is a great place to start. They carry a variety of jacket options as well as all the pieces of a great tux!

While a single breasted jacket is the most formal option, Joseph A. Bank offers many different style options for your groom to choose from. If rain is good luck, this bride and groom are set. It was a hurricane outside, literally, but you would never know from these beautiful photos. Andrea Jacobson from The Observatory did a phenomenal job on this one. As did Beehive Events and Occasions Caterers. In spite of the weather, a great time was had by all at The National Museum of Women in the Arts.

So it's been forever since I've blogged...blame it on writer's block or a busy wedding season, but I'm back with a fun idea! Lots of our brides have been looking for a unique Save the Date lately. And Lucky Luxe has something really new or maybe I should say antique. Check out their screen printed hankies. You can have them made for save the dates or invites complete with an envelope for mailing. What a great way to set your wedding apart while setting the tone for a vintage wedding. Love!

My favorite rehearsal dinners are relaxed and fun. There is nothing worse than a "night before" that outshines the big day. With that in mind, I think Homemade Pizza Company has a great idea on their hands. If you aren't familiar, they are a Chicago based chain of stores that sells fresh, but uncooked pizza for you to bake in your own oven (something I take advantage of about once a week). They have just rolled out a catering arm that will come to your event and make fresh pizzas on site in their mobile oven. What a fabulous (and reasonable) way to kick off your celebratory weekend!

We are very excited about the beautiful wedding we are working on this holiday weekend, but it is going to be a hot one. It got me thinking about how we help our guests beat the heat at a ceremony. Two of my favorite are functional AND adorable. The parasols offer guests shade where there is none and the hats are a stylish way to keep the guys cool. We used both at a wedding in the Bahamas, but you could just as easily use them in DC. Happy Memorial Day!

So, I have to admit, we haven't tried this at one of our weddings yet, but it's such a cute idea! The company is called Weddeos.com. They send you 5 videos cameras for your friends to shoot your wedding. You send them back after the big day and they edit it into a video. While there is no replacement for a professional videographer, this could be perfect for couple on a tight budget that still wants a video keepsake. Check it out!

As an event planner, I am often asked what the new wedding trend will be. While colors and flower ideas are usually what people are expecting, I sometimes see something less predictable on the horizon. So it is with the seeming overwhelming obsession people have with bacon. It is everywhere! And I mean everywhere.

From the unexpected yet safe items like Bacon Marmalade for a favor...

Everyone and their mother has blogged about Antropologie's new wedding line BHLDN, but I am so excited that I just have to jump on the bandwagon. The looks are eclectic and ethereal and gowns start at only $600. But it doesn't stop there - they have amazing jewelry, headpieces, shoes, handbags and bridesmaids dresses. I may just have to buy a few things, or a ton, for myself!

I always say that everything will eventually be new again. So it is with the send off. For a number of years brides chose to stay till the end of the wedding and not miss a second. Of late, we've had more and more clients choose to organize a real send off. You can choose, bubbles, sparklers or these "hooray flags" as a fun photo op. This is especially helpful if you have a venue with a very defined end time. Once everyone is outside, its pretty clear that it is time to go home saving you from any overtime charges. Its certainly a lot more elegant than closing the bar and turning on the lights.

There are some incredibly talented cake designers in the DC area but you may have found that your venue, be it hotel or country club require that you use their cake. Some in-house bakers are amazing others, no so much. Be sure to schedule a tasting and pick a flavor that you and your guests will like. But what about the look. I am a huge fan of the clean simple cake with just one large sugar flower detail, like the one in the image above. Ask the pastry chef to create a clean cake with rolled fondant and you can provide real ribbon (our favorite resource is M&J trimmings) and one big sugared flower from

Global Sugar Art. Yes, I am a micro-manager.

I'm not sure how but, someone (probably Martha) says you must have something at your wedding and we all fall in line. The specialty drink is great example. Don't get me wrong, I love a yummy cocktail, or two, but since everyone has them, the specialty drink just isn't feeling so special anymore.

For a new twist, how about serving a punch? You can create a beautiful display with the libation and it might even take the crush off your bar a bit.

Two of our favorite recipes

Pomegranate Champagne Punch Recipe
yield: Makes 12 servings
Ingredients of Pomegranate Champagne Punch Recipe
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
2 750-ml bottles chilled brut Champagne
1 1/2 cups white rum
1 1/4 cups pomegranate juice
1 large lemon, thinly sliced
Pomegranate seeds
Fresh mint leaves
1 ice block

Bring 1/2 cup water and sugar to boil in small saucepan, stirring until sugar dissolves. Simmer 5 minutes. Cool syrup completely.
Combine Champagne, rum, and pomegranate juice in punch bowl. Add enough syrup to sweeten to taste. Mix in lemon slices, pomegranate seeds, and mint leaves. Add ice block to bowl.

Baptist Punch
1 part cranberry juice
2 part orange juice
1 part pineapple juice
* Everclear

Yes, for the party! If you've been under a rock, you might not know that the premier DC wedding event is taking place this Sunday at the Park Hyatt - The Washingtonian Bride & Groom Unveiled event. We might be a bit biased, because this is the third year that we have planned the event, but if you are getting married in the DC area, you have to stop by! Along with yummy food and drink provided by chef Brian McBride from the Park Hyatt there will also be a Vera Wang runway show and many of the area's top wedding vendors. There are only a few spots left, but if you are lucky enough to snag one, please stop by and say hi to our team!

It's true, we have dropped off the Earth for the past 10 days or so. The whole A. Dominick team took a real break over the holidays, but now we are well-rested any ready for weddings!

Getting your groom to buy (appropriate) gifts for his groomsmen can be like pulling teeth. I may have a solution- Bella Moda has tons of fun cufflinks and money clips at very affordable prices. It never fails. The holidays roll around and our brides lose focus for a few weeks. It's totally understandable, we all get a bit overwhelmed with party-going, cooking and gift buying. That reminds me, our office will be CLOSED this Thursday and Friday for Turkey Day.

Unfortunately come January many brides are in a full-scale panic. In an effort to combat this cycle, try to do a few small "to do's" in the next few weeks. Depending on where you are in the planning process that might mean getting your guest list finished, or purchasing your bridal party gifts or taking advantage of the pre-holiday sale from Beau-coup for welcome bags items or napkins. We can talk about those holiday pounds later...

Bluegrass Birthday

Yes, we do a lot of weddings but we love small parties too!

This project was particularly fun to plan. Ande, the birthday boy turned 40 and wanted a laid back, backyard celebration. Ande provided is own (beautiful) tent and our Danielle came up with the amazing details, including the how do you like your BBQ buttons and Blue Grass band.

I love the mix of Dark & Stormies in mason jars with stemless Riedel-filled wine glasses. The best of both worlds!

Did I mention this is Ande's spectacular blue and star tent?

He owns Nantucket tents but is going to be renting to the DC market starting in 2011!

Allan Woods made these sweet daisy arrangement and Party Rental LTD delivered the rustic farm chairs and burlap linen. Michael Bonfigli snapped all of these wonderful shots.

But, one that I always make time for is District Weddings (Edited by our own Danielle Freedman). It has beautiful- real weddings, vendor recommendations and most importantly is tailored specifically to the DC bride. Monogram madness

One of our recent (and adorable) brides was crazy for her monogram. She wanted it everywhere- from the welcome boxes to the cake. If you notice we used her married monogram only on items used after the ceremony. The items used before had only their first initials. Thanks to our fabulous team of vendors, including Haute Papier for the beautiful designs and Steve Canning who provided these images, we were able to make her dreams come true.

This fall has been a blur of amazing parties. We have been everywhere from the Newseum to the Four Seasons and everywhere in between!

This weekend, however, I get to be on the other side. My lovely sister-in-law is tying the knot in sunny California and I will be a regular guest. I can't wait to have a cocktail and kick up my heels! I'm sure I will have some fresh insight for our next parties. In fact, she already emailed us a great schedule with weather details and the dress code for the many events we will be attending. As a guest, I love that! Stay tuned for photos and details.

Window Dressing

We know you are going to look great on your wedding day but what about your bridesmaids? Sure, you want to choose something that goes with your overall "look" and also makes them feel pretty. Please don't say it will be a dress they will wear again. That NEVER happens. Once you wear a dress as a bridesmaid you just can't see it any other way. That said, when it comes to shopping the more options the better. We just love Bella Bridesmaids in Bethesda and Hitched Maids in Georgetown. They both have beautiful options and excellent staff to help mediate the process. Happy Hunting!

I often say that I wish I could be sillier, act goofy, not care what other's think. Maybe that's what I love the idea of Live Band Karaoke. What could be less "cool" than getting up on stage and belting out your favorite song with a full, live band? Harikaraoke will come and play live for you to do your best Lady Gaga performance. I think this would be such a hit at your next party! Maybe you will even convince me to try?

One of our favorite brides has been searching high and low for the perfect honeymoon spot in the Caribbean. She had a few perameters (not too expensive, some adventure and some relaxation and an authentic island vibe). Well, I think she found it. This is the AMAZING Peninsula House in the Dominican Republic. With only 6 rooms this luxury property would be the perfect place to reconnect with your new husband. Or in my case, your old one!

I write this on a REALLY rainy day. Well, all of that rain got me thinking about my cure for rainy wedding days- cute umbrellas. Now that vacation is over I am beyond excited for fall wedding season!!

With that in mind, I can a great, new, budget-friendly find. I may sound like a broken record, but I just LOVE french macarons. NOT the American-style haystacks of coconut macaroons. The macarons I adore are delicate almond sandwich cookies filled with buttercream, fruit preserves or chocolate ganache.

They are the perfect favor wrapped in a cello bag and ribbon or a wonderful addition to a dessert display. Until now, these fabulous confections have been tough to find at a reasonable price. Albert Uster the wholesaler of baking supplies carries them for only .85 cents each! You will have to buy at least 288 of them, but they will be gone in no time- trust me.

Big getaway, Big island

We work hard- really hard. So, twice a year we shut down and take a well deserved break. Until August 1st, I will be on the big island of Hawaii recharging and getting ready for fall wedding season (Danielle and Cindy have taken off for thier own adventures). I LOVE destination weddings and have been lucky to work in places like Cape Town, Boca Grande, and Booth Bay Harbor. Unfortunately, the downturn in the economy made it less polite to ask 100 of your closest friend to book a flight, hotel and rental car. I, forever the optimist, think things are getting back to normal and I hope the same will be true for destination weddings. To that end, I will be doing a series of site visits in the New England area the next week or so. Stay tuned for some new locations to day dream about!

Brides have a lot of freedom when deciding what type of cake to have: cake flavor, frosting flavor, fillings, color, designs, flowers, decorations -- the list goes on and on. This can sometimes leave a bride stranded and hungry… for some guidance.

It may be helpful - and it certainly is fun - to simply search through online images (Flickr - We Heart It, Style me Pretty - it goes without saying) to find images that stand out to you or look particularly beautiful or delicious.

Type in “wedding cake” for a general search, or if you have a theme in mind, try something like “wedding cake sunflowers,” for example. You will soon be smiling (and trying to quiet your rumbling stomach) as images of towering cakes piled high with flowers or decorated with intricate, sugary designs fill your screen.

Choose a few that you might want to work with – perhaps you enjoy the way the sugar flowers (in shades of peach, pale yellow, and burgundy) wind around the frosted tiers, or maybe it’s the two lemons perched bright and cheerful on top that make you smile.

Whatever it is- even if it’s just one aspect of the cake you enjoy (love the flowers, hate the shape of the cake), save it and use it for inspiration later when you meet with your baker of choice. It will make it easier for him or her as well as for you as you plan one of the most fun parts of the wedding.

It may have been the fantastic drinks at the speakeasy called the Gibson on 14th Street, but I am just loving all things 20's inspired. You can achieve the 20's style by sticking with pale tones of peach and pink, serving classic cocktails and wearing loads of pearls and a drop-waisted gown. We also loved these ideas from a few of our recent weddings.

I always say that my greatest strength is fixing any challenge that comes up at an event.

Well, I had a brand new challenge recently - the Maid of Honor came to me with fear in her eyes, and asked me to come up with SOMETHING for her to say for her toast. She had no idea she was expected to speak. My team did a bit of quick research and jotted down a few notes from some of our favorite toasts. Maybe you should send this on to your Maid of Honor?

Good Evening! For those of you who don't know me, I am _________, the very proud Maid of Honor. I want to start by congratulating bride and groom, and thanking her parents for this magical evening.

When I look at the bride and groom, I feel such a whirlwind of emotions? I know that _____ has found her true match and I know that theirs will be a marriage of long standing. My heart is bursting with love for you two today. I know you have a wonderful adventure ahead of you, and with God's blessing your marriage will last for decades to come.

I never knew _____ before he dated my sister/friend, so I can't tell you horrible stories about him, but I can tell you that I think he is perfect for my sister/friend!? He's easy going, interesting, easy to talk to, and he has a great sense of humor! We are very happy to welcome _____ into our family. We know he's made for us, and we hope we're made for him!

______, I want to note how beautiful you look today, and to tell you that this has truly been a special day for me. Thank you for giving true meaning to the word sister/friend and for sharing the last ___ years with me. I know how much joy she has brought into our lives, and I know that she'll bring that joy into ______ life as well.

As children, _____ and I were pretty much inseparable, and we always managed to keep each other laughing. When I think back on our adventures in childhood, I have nothing but fond memories.

Yes, all of the details matter but with the recent events in the news globally, some brides may find they need to be flexible and understanding.
Take for example the volcano in Iceland. It might not seem like your problem if flights in Europe are disrupted, but chances are many if not ALL of a wedding's flowers are coming from the flower market in Holland.

The oil spill in the Gulf may also become an issue soon if you are planning to serve seafood on your big day. Don't panic - I don't know anyone who has been effected, but only time will tell.

The good news is, around here, there are always crab cakes!

Citronelle provided the most amazing meal, Multifor created a beautiful table and Kendall Barrett topped of the night with a decadent chocolate birthday cake. No, I am not opening a political debate - just pontificating about how your guests will be presented with the entree on the big day.

It can be a difficult thing to choose one meal that will make 100 people from far flung states and a range of ages all happy. The truth is, you will never make everyone happy, but should try to please as many as possible.

If you decide to give the guests a choice ahead of time, you will have to list the options on the invitation. I admit, this is not my favorite. I think is can look a bit tacky, but if you have to do it, make sure that your guests have to indicate who order which dish. There is nothing less elegant than a wait holding a plate asking did you have the fish?

Table side ordering is a possibility at many hotels, but is an expensive endeavor and requires more time for the kitchen to prepare. One of our brides will be having an extra course and a dance set so the chef can cook her guests meals. An elegant experience to be sure, but not for every bride.

So neither feels right, what are you to do? Many are opting for a duo. This means every guest will get two proteins on one plate. Being DC, we see lots of crab cake and steak. Let's face it, it's a classic for a reason!

For a more whimsical photo session we love adding a few props. We have used open picture frames, poster board and markers to write messages. My favorite new event trend is the food truck. Not only is it a great surprise for your guests it is so easy to arrange. Just call the Fojol Brothers (known for their yummy Indian food and crazy uniforms) or Berliner (for classic Good Humor ice cream in a vintage truck) and they will come to your party, serve your guests and leave you with no clean up. Now that is the way to eat and run!

We had the pleasure of working with Julie Barrow at the Four Season's last week on a charity gala. We will post images soon, but I had to share a wonderful detail...we ordered coffee for our staff and the amazing team at the Four Season's surprised us with a beautiful display of coffee and teas including flavored syrups. If you are a coffee fan, this is an adorable detail. The bottles are available at most container stores and your caterer can make the syrups for you. If you have the time a vintage sign would be a great touch.

If you check in with us often, you know I am much more of the useful info kind of blogger. That said, once in a while it is fun to show you how we gather inspiration for our weddings. Like most of you we read all the magazines and many blogs to come up with ideas for our events. We also have the benefit of attending loads of events and talking endlessly with our clients about their style and inspiration. One of our amazing brides is having her reception at the Newseum this spring but instead of having the contemporary design you would expect in that space, she wants to embrace the more rustic elegant look that so many of your are trying to achieve. The photos above are a few images that we are using for inspiration including the chalkboard instead of escort cards, found objects and a display of terrariums. After looking a stack of wedding magazines you have probably chosen your favorite flowers. But, keep in mind, your favorite flower may have a strong scent- either sweet or not, you have to take this into account in your wedding plans. A sweet smelling bouquet is a great thing, but a room full of strongly scented arrangements can overwhelm your guests and take away from the flavor of their meal. Gardenia, Lilies and Tuberrose all smell amazing. Baby's breath, not so much. Maybe Martha should have a scratch and sniff section in her next issue!

All of our brides are beautiful, but our most recent bride was in amazing shape. When I asked she told me her secret was cutting out sweets execpt for sweet riot.
